Becoming a Physiotherapist in Germany: 2026 Guide

For those who want to become physiotherapists in Germany: 2026 physiotherapy recognition (Anerkennung), salaries and the Toedur consultancy process.

Germany, which has Europe's largest economy and one of the most advanced healthcare systems, is experiencing the largest physiotherapist shortage in its history due to the aging of its demographic structure and the importance placed on preventive healthcare.

Two Main Career Paths

1. Physiotherapy Ausbildung (Vocational Training)

  • The 3-year "Ausbildung" system: theory and practice combined.
  • A monthly trainee salary of 1,000 € — 1,200 € during the training period.
  • After graduation, the rate of starting employment at the institution where you trained is almost 100%.
  • A high school diploma + certified German at a minimum B2 level is sufficient.

2. University Education (Bachelor's and Master's)

Physiotherapy bachelor's education (Bachelor of Science) at universities usually takes 3.5 — 4 years. For university admission, the equivalence of your high school diploma and your YKS result to the German Abitur system is checked through Anabin.

Recognition (Anerkennung) for Graduates from Türkiye

If you are a graduate of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation department in Türkiye, you cannot start working directly in Germany with your diploma. To practice your profession legally, you must complete the Anerkennung process.

  • Defizitbescheid: Your diploma, transcript and internship logbooks are reviewed; a deficiency notice is issued.
  • Anpassungslehrgang (Adaptation Internship): 6-18 months of paid internship — the path recommended by Toedur.
  • Kenntnisprüfung (Knowledge Exam): Obtaining recognition directly through a professional knowledge exam — a challenging option.

Language Proficiency

  • General German: A minimum B2 certificate from Goethe, telc or ÖSD is required.
  • Professional Language (Fachsprache): Some states (e.g. NRW) may require a Fachsprachenprüfung.
