Germany Health Insurance Guide 2026: GKV and PKV

Germany health insurance 2026 guide: differences between Statutory (GKV) and Private (PKV), student premiums, the M10 notification and Toedur settlement consultancy.

Living, studying or working in Germany also means being part of one of the most established and disciplined social security systems in the world. As of 2026, in the digitalized German bureaucracy, having valid health insurance is not a "choice" but a legal obligation that opens every door, from university enrollment to a residence permit.

The German Health Insurance System: GKV vs PKV

  • Statutory Health Insurance (GKV): Approximately 90% of the population. Institutions such as Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), AOK, Barmer. Premiums based on income, standard service. Family coverage included.
  • Private Health Insurance (PKV): High-income employees, self-employed individuals and students within a certain age limit. Premiums based on age and health history. Faster appointments, single-bed room.

The Age 30 Rule

For students who turn 30, the discounted rate in statutory insurance ends and premiums can increase by about 2.5 times. At Toedur, for our clients over the age of 30, we activate economical "Educational PKV" options that meet statutory coverage.

Under certain conditions it is possible to obtain an exemption from statutory health insurance and save significantly. We explain who this exception applies to and how to apply for it, step by step, in our what is an AT11 document guide.

M10 Notification

In 2026, a physical insurance certificate is not enough for university enrollment (Immatrikulation) in Germany. An M10 data transfer is carried out in which your insurance company electronically notifies the university that you are insured. Enrollment cannot be completed without this notification.

Personal Liability Insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung)

In Germany, health insurance alone is not enough. When you accidentally damage someone's property or health, your legal liability is unlimited. This insurance, taken out for as little as €40 — €60 per year, protects you from the risk of compensation worth millions of Euros.
