Germany Nursing Salaries 2026 Guide

Discover Germany nursing salaries, 2026 supplementary payments, equivalence processes, and career opportunities with Toedur's expertise.

Germany, which has Europe's largest economy, is experiencing the greatest shortage of qualified personnel in its history due to its aging population and steadily growing healthcare sector. As of 2026, in order to close this gap, the German government has both eased bureaucratic hurdles for international healthcare workers and raised salary scales to an attractive level.

Supplementary Payments That Take the Salary to the Top

  • Night Shift Bonus: A 25% — 30% hourly supplement between 8:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
  • Sunday Work: A 50% hourly bonus.
  • Public Holidays: 125% — 150% of the hourly wage.
  • Shift and Care Bonus: An average fixed hardship bonus of 150 € — 300 € per month.

Salary Differences by State

In Germany, nursing is subject to union (TVöD-Pflege) agreements. Although salaries at public hospitals are standardized nationwide, private clinics and state economies create differences. In high-prosperity states such as Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse, salaries are at the top, but rent costs are high. In some regions of Saxony and NRW, although the nominal salary may appear low, purchasing power and savings potential are high.

Tax Classes and Net Salary

  • Tax Class 1 (Single): Gross 4,000 € → net approximately 2,550 € — 2,650 €.
  • Tax Class 3 (Married, with a non-working spouse): Gross 4,000 € → net approximately 2,900 € — 3,000 €.

Specialist Nursing (Fachweiterbildung)

A nurse who has obtained full equivalence can complete a 2-year specialization training (which can be studied while working) to earn the title Fachkrankenpfleger (Specialist Nurse). Nurses who specialize in areas such as Intensive Care, Anesthesia, Operating Room, and Oncology in particular make an enormous leap on the salary scale.

  • Shorter working hours: In many hospitals, 38.5 — 39 hours instead of 40.
  • Guaranteed leave entitlement: A minimum of 30 days of paid leave per year is under legal guarantee.
  • Digital equivalence process: The recognition of experience gained in Turkey has become much more transparent.
